Babiana angustifolia

Native to South Africa's Western Cape province, Babiana angustifolia grows on damp to seasonally wet sandy or loamy flats and lower slopes. This cormous Iridaceae reaches 10-20 cm tall, with the pleated, hairy, lance-shaped leaves typical of the genus. In spring it produces a spike of zygomorphic, dark blue to violet flowers, the lower tepals marked with red or blue-black, borne on a narrow, curved floral tube. The common name baboon flower comes from baboons digging up and eating the corms. It needs full sun, well-drained soil and a dry summer dormancy.
