Curcuma longa

Native to South or Southeast Asia (India, Vietnam or China), Curcuma longa, turmeric, is a perennial herb of the ginger family (Zingiberaceae), unknown in the wild and cultivated for millennia. It forms a clump of large oblong leaves up to 1 m long, arising from a fleshy rhizome ringed with leaf-base scars, its flesh bright orange and rich in curcumin. In summer, a conical spike of pale green to pink bracts bears small whitish-yellow flowers. Sterile, the plant multiplies only by rhizome division. It requires warmth, humidity and partial shade.
