Alpinia zerumbet (syn. Alpinia speciosa), the shell ginger, is native to East Asia (China, Taiwan, Japan). This Zingiberaceae perennial grows from a fleshy, aromatic rhizome into upright clumps of leafy stems up to 2-3 m tall, with large glossy lance-shaped leaves. In summer, pendulous clusters of waxy, shell-like white to pink flowers marked with yellow and red throats appear at the tips of older canes. Not a true bulb, it needs warmth, humidity, rich well-drained soil, part shade to sun, and is frost-tender, flowering best on mature growth left undisturbed over winter.
