Tigridia GENERAL

The genus Tigridia (Iridaceae) comprises around thirty to fifty bulbous species native to Mexico and Central America, a few extending into South America. The tunicated bulb produces a fan of pleated leaves and a stem 40 to 60 cm tall. The flowers, with three large spreading tepals alternating with three smaller tepals, bear a spotted, tiger's-eye-like centre; each flower lasts only a day but they follow one another through summer. Colours range from white to red, orange or yellow. Grow in full sun, well-drained soil; precise species not confirmed, description given at genus level.
