The genus Galanthus, or snowdrop, comprises around twenty species of bulbous perennials in the Amaryllidaceae family, native to Europe and Asia Minor, from Spain to Ukraine. Among the earliest bulbs to flower in late winter, sometimes as snow is still melting, each bulb produces two basal linear leaves and a stem bearing a single white, nodding, bell-shaped flower with six tepals in two whorls: the outer three white, the inner three shorter and marked with green. Several hundred hybrids and cultivars exist. Snowdrops prefer cool, humus-rich, well-drained soil in part shade under deciduous cover.
