Galanthus GENERAL

Category photo (no photo of its own for this entry)
The genus Galanthus, or snowdrop, comprises around twenty species of perennial bulbous plants of the family Amaryllidaceae, native to Europe and Asia Minor, from Spain to Ukraine. They are among the first bulbs to flower in late winter, sometimes as soon as the snow begins to melt. Each bulb produces two linear basal leaves and a stem bearing a single white, nodding, bell-shaped flower, with six tepals arranged in two whorls: the three outer ones white, the three shorter inner ones marked with green. There are several hundred hybrids and cultivars. Snowdrops thrive in cool, humus-rich, well-drained soil, in a half-shaded position under deciduous cover.
