Gladiolus ceresianus

Native from southern Namaqualand to the western Karoo, the Roggeveld plateau and the Bokkeveld, South Africa, Gladiolus ceresianus grows in stony clay soil. This small geophyte, no taller than 10 cm, produces, from August to October, an inclined spike of 1 to 4 brown to purple flowers with dark veining, pleasantly scented. It is related to Gladiolus uysiae, with flat leaves, and Gladiolus virescens, with dark, hard corm scales. It requires well-drained soil and a sunny position.
