Gladiolus virescens

Native to the winter-rainfall regions of South Africa, Gladiolus virescens, sometimes called the yellow kalkoentjie, is a small cormous Iridaceae reaching about 25 cm, with narrow leaves. Its large, particularly fragrant flowers are yellowish-green to orchid pink, veined in a darker shade, and recall certain orchids in shape. Like other winter-growing Cape Gladiolus, it begins growth in late autumn as rains arrive, develops through winter, and flowers in early spring, before entering dry summer dormancy. It requires well-drained soil and a sunny position.
