Moraea sp? ‘Sutherland’

The precise species of this Moraea, originating from the Sutherland area (Roggeveld plateau, Northern Cape, South Africa, known for its harsh winters and frosts), could not be confirmed with certainty; the description is therefore given at genus level. Moraea is a large Iridaceae genus of over 220 species, more than 120 of them endemic to the Cape Floristic Region. The plants grow from a globose corm with firm tunics, are generally winter-growing and summer-dormant, and produce flowers resembling small beardless irises, in purple, yellow or strikingly contrasted colours. Grow in well-drained soil, in a sunny position, sheltered from excess summer moisture.
