Moraea sp? ‘Sutherland’

Category photo (no photo of its own for this entry)
The precise species of this Moraea, native to the Sutherland area (Roggeveld plateau, Northern Cape, South Africa, renowned for its harsh winters and frosts), could not be confirmed with certainty; the description is therefore given at genus level. Moraea is a vast genus of Iridaceae with more than 220 species, of which more than 120 are endemic to the Cape Floral Region. The plants grow from a globose cormus with firm tunics, are generally winter-growing and dormant in summer, and produce flowers reminiscent of small beardless irises, purple, yellow or in contrasting colours. Grow in well-drained soil, sunny position, sheltered from excess summer moisture.
