Lilium umbellatum

The old botanical name "Lilium umbellatum" is now regarded as a synonym of Lilium philadelphicum, the wood lily, native to North America from Canada south into the central United States. This bulbous lily grows in prairies, clearings and dry open woodland. The upright stem bears whorled leaves and, in summer, terminates in one or a few upright, cup-shaped flowers, orange to bright red, spotted purple near the base of the tepals, which narrow into a distinct claw — a feature distinguishing it from other North American lilies. It requires well-drained, rather poor soil, a sunny to lightly shaded position, and a dry winter dormancy.
