Lilium philadelphicum

Widespread across Canada and the northern United States, Lilium philadelphicum grows in dry prairies, open woods and calcareous fens, and is thought to be the most widely distributed native lily in North America. Growing from a scaly bulb, it reaches 45-90 cm tall, with narrow leaves arranged in whorls along an unbranched stem. In summer it bears one to four upward-facing (unlike most lilies) flowers, vivid orange-red with purplish-brown spots and a flared, cup-shaped form, attracting hummingbirds and butterflies. It requires well-drained soil and a sunny position.
