Iris samariae is an Oncocyclus section iris, described by Dinsmore in 1933 and associated with the Samaria region at the heart of the southern Levant. Closely related to Iris lortetii, it differs in its larger flowers, up to 12 cm across, with broad, only slightly reflexed falls on a cream ground finely dotted and veined with purple, marked with a small dark-brown blotch and reddish-brown hairs. The rounded standards are edged with pink and dark brown at the base. Like other Oncocyclus irises, it grows on dry calcareous soils in full sun, with a strict summer dormancy after early flowering.
