Iris lortetii

A rare endemic of southern Lebanon, upper Galilee and the Nablus hills, Iris lortetii is a rhizomatous iris of section Oncocyclus, 30 to 50 cm tall. Its light green, sword-shaped leaves are arranged in fans of six to eight. It produces a single, spectacular flower 9 to 12 cm across: the finely dotted, pinkish-beige falls curve downward, while the erect, striped pink standards frame a dark signal patch and a yellow beard on a crimson ground. An endangered species, it grows on stony limestone slopes and requires a sunny position and well-drained soil.
