micranthus fistulosa

The correct name is Micranthus fistulosus, now often included within Micranthus tubulosus, a species endemic to the Cape region of South Africa, from the Bokkeveld Mountains to Port Elizabeth. It is a cormous plant 10 to 45 cm tall, girdled at the base with a collar of stiff fibres, bearing two or more short, hollow (fistulose), falcate leaves, often dry at flowering time. The small, bilabiate flowers, mid to dark blue, sometimes violet, blue-mauve or white, line up in dense, two-ranked spikes surrounded by dry, brittle bracts. It flowers in spring. Grow in well-drained soil, in a sunny position, with summer dormancy.
