Micranthus tubulosus

Endemic to the Western Cape, South Africa, Micranthus tubulosus, nicknamed the "hollow-leaf combflower", is a cormous Iridaceae reaching 45 cm tall. It is distinguished by two or more short, inflated, hollow (fistulose), sickle-shaped leaves, truncate at the tip, usually about half as long as the stem. The blue to mauve, fragrant flowers are borne in dense, two-ranked spikes; the dry, rigid bracts are brown with broad membranous margins. The species prefers dry, shale- or granite-derived soils and flowers from November to December. It requires well-drained soil and a sunny position.
