Haemanthus albiflos (caduc)

Haemanthus albiflos, the white paintbrush, is a bulbous plant of the Amaryllidaceae native to southern Africa, where it grows in a range of habitats, from temperate mountain slopes to rocky coastlines, often in shade. Unlike some other Haemanthus, it is normally evergreen, with up to three pairs of thick, dark green, glossy leaves, sometimes ciliate at the margin; in cultivation it can nonetheless shed its leaves in winter under cool or dry conditions. From late summer through winter it produces an umbel of small white flowers with prominent yellow anthers, forming a paintbrush-like head. It is grown in part shade, in well-drained soil, sheltered from full sun and frost.
