Haemanthus albiflos — Elephants Ears,Paint brush
3 to 4 broad persistent fleshy leaves. Definitely prefers shady positions and makes a very good house plant. In late autumn, appear the paintbrush like inflorescences with prominent yellow anthers.
The genus
Large bulbs which produce bloodred waxy flowers before the two fleshy leaves appear (excepting H. albiflos which is evergreen). Not frosthardy; can be grown in pots, but resent disturbance.
