Amorphophallus konjac

Amorphophallus konjac, syn. A. rivieri (Araceae), is native to East Asia, where its tuber is traditionally cultivated to make konjac, prized for its high glucomannan content. This perennial tuber produces a single, deeply divided leaf on a petiole mottled dark green and white, sometimes exceeding 1 m in height. In spring, before the foliage, a dramatic inflorescence appears with a wavy, deep purple spathe that gives off a fetid odour attracting pollinating flies. Grow in rich, well-drained soil in part shade, sheltered from frost; the tuber can be lifted and stored over winter in cold climates.
