Colchicum speciosum (Colchicaceae) is a bulbous plant native to the Caucasus, Turkey and Iran, growing in mountain meadows and open woodland. In autumn, ahead of the leaves, it produces large, cup-shaped, rosy-purple flowers with a white throat, among the largest in the genus, followed in spring by broad, glossy foliage. Grow in full sun or part shade, in rich, well-drained soil; hardy to around -20 °C.
