Vallota speciosa is the old botanical name, now treated as a synonym, for Cyrtanthus elatus, the Scarborough lily. This evergreen bulbous plant, native to the Cape Province of South Africa, sporadically bears large, glowing scarlet, trumpet-shaped flowers during the warmer months, on stout stems above leathery, strap-shaped leaves that quickly form clumps. Grow in full sun or bright part shade, in rich, well-drained soil; frost-tender, keep frost-free in cold climates.
