In early August, while the garden is still in full swing, it’s already the right time to think about autumn. Colchicums, autumn crocuses (Crocus speciosus, Crocus sativus) and sternbergias are planted now to bloom from September onward, often even before their leaves appear. A true firework of mauve, white and yellow just as the rest of the garden starts to tire.
How to proceed:
- Choose a sunny or partly shaded spot with well-drained soil: these bulbs hate standing moisture.
- Loosen the soil to a good depth and remove weeds. On heavy soil, work in a little sand or gravel.
- Plant each bulb at a depth equal to 2 or 3 times its height, pointed tip facing up, spacing them about ten centimetres apart.
- Water lightly right after planting to settle the bulb firmly into the soil, then let nature take over.
- Mark the spot with a label: flowering can be quick and surprising, and it’s easy to forget where you planted!
A little seasonal tip: while you’re at it, keep an eye on watering your dahlias and cannas, still in full summer bloom. They’ll thank you right up until the first frosts.
