Biarum abbreviatum

Biarum tenuifolium subsp. abbreviatum (Araceae) is a tuberous aroid native to southern Italy, Sardinia, Sicily and western Greece. This subspecies is distinguished by its upright, oblanceolate leaves, only gently undulate and relatively short, appearing in autumn. Like other Biarum, it produces an erect, bicoloured spathe with no leaves visible at flowering time, giving off a faint carrion scent that attracts pollinating insects. Grow in full sun or part shade, in well-drained soil kept dry in summer; hardy in Mediterranean climates.
