Native to the grasslands and forest margins of southern Africa, Agapanthus inapertus is distinguished by its tubular, drooping, dark blue to violet flowers (occasionally white), gathered in dense heads on stems up to 1.5 m tall. It flowers from January to March. Its narrow, grey-green, fan-arranged leaves are deciduous: unlike most agapanthus, this species goes completely dormant during the dry winter. It needs well-drained soil and a sunny position.
