The genus Agapanthus, native to southern Africa (notably South Africa), comprises rhizomatous or fleshy-rooted perennials forming clumps of strap-shaped evergreen or deciduous leaves. Dwarf cultivars, selected for their compact habit (30-50 cm), produce in summer tall flower stalks topped with a spherical umbel of trumpet-shaped flowers, usually blue or white. Free-flowering and hardy, these dwarf Agapanthus suit borders, beds and containers, in full sun and well-drained soil, with good drought tolerance once established.
