Agave americana

Native to Mexico and now widely naturalised in dry regions around the Mediterranean, Agave americana is a succulent forming a large rosette of thick, lance-shaped, grey-green leaves with a waxy bloom, spiny margins, and a sharp terminal spike. Monocarpic, it flowers only once, typically between 10 and 25 years of age, sending up an erect flowering stalk 5 to 9 metres tall bearing numerous greenish-yellow flowers in panicles, before dying. It thrives in poor, very well-drained soil, in full sun, and tolerates both drought and light frost.
