Albuca maxima (ex altissima)
A typical wintergrower with incurved almost tube like leaves; the flowerstem rises up late winter and the green white flowers appear in early spring. Julian Slade: .Flowers white with a green stripe, nodding or drooping. Leaves somewhat succulent and rigid, deeply channeled, covered with a gray powdery bloom. Quite tall, 5-6 feet (1.5-1.8 m). Flowering late winter and spring. Winter-growing, with a very short summer dormancy. This species also produces copious seed, and has reportedly become naturalized in Italy
The genus
The south african Albuca is emerging as a promising genus for gardeners in dry and warm mediterranean regions. Where frosts are light, suited for wild gardens and informal plantings, but in cooler climates albuca should be cultivated in glasshouses or verandas. There are winter growers and summer growers.
