Allium caesium (Amaryllidaceae) is native to the desert and steppe regions of Central Asia (Xinjiang, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan), growing at 700 to 2000 m elevation. Its hollow stems, 35 to 50 cm tall, carry spherical summer umbels about 2.5 cm across, with azure to violet-blue flowers marked by a brown midrib. Semi-cylindrical foliage accompanies the flowering stem. Grow in full sun in lean, well-drained soil; a hardy species well suited to dry climates.
