Allium nigrum (syn. Allium multibulbosum, Amaryllidaceae), despite its name, bears white rather than black flowers; the name refers to the dark centre of each flower, formed by the green ovary. Native to the Mediterranean region, it reaches 40 to 80 cm and carries a broad, flat, dense umbel of white star-shaped flowers in late spring (May–June). Easy to grow in full sun, in well-drained soil; excellent in borders or as a cut flower.
