Allium chameomoly

Widespread around the Mediterranean (Spain, France including Corsica, Italy, Malta, Greece, North Africa), Allium chamaemoly grows on rocky slopes and dry coastal turf, often on limestone. This tiny Allium reaches barely 10 cm, its scape so reduced that the white, star-shaped umbel opens almost flush with the ground. Unusually for the genus, it flowers in winter, largely independent of its thread-like, prostrate leaves, which may be absent or already withering at bloom time. A discreet species for enthusiasts of Mediterranean bulbs, requiring full sun and sharp drainage.
