Native to central Asia (historical Turkestan: Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and neighbouring regions), where it grows at altitude, Allium elatum (now often included within Allium macleanii) is a bulbous perennial with a sturdy scape reaching up to 1 m. Broad basal leaves, often withered by flowering time, precede a dense, spherical umbel about 7 cm across, made up of numerous small, star-shaped purple flowers. Flowering occurs from late spring to early summer. This species favours full sun, well-drained soil and a dry rest period after flowering.
