Allium macranthum

Allium macranthum is a bulbous perennial native to wet habitats in the Himalayas (Bhutan, Sikkim) and western China (Gansu, Shaanxi, Sichuan, Tibet), growing at elevations of 2700-4200 m. The cylindrical bulb produces flat, linear leaves up to 45 cm long and a flowering scape reaching 60 cm. In late summer it bears a loose umbel of a few pendent, bell-shaped, deep purple flowers. Unlike many Mediterranean alliums, it prefers consistently moist, humus-rich soil, in sun to part shade, and becomes dormant in winter after flowering.
