Allium narcissiflorum

Endemic to the south-western Alps (Piedmont and Liguria in Italy, Provence and Dauphiné in France), Allium narcissiflorum is a small, delicate alpine allium that forms clumps via underground rhizomes. In high summer, stems no taller than 15 cm bear a loose umbel of 4 to 10 bell-shaped, ruby-red to magenta flowers, nodding at first and becoming erect as they mature. It thrives in well-drained, sunny rock-garden conditions and is best left undisturbed for several years before dividing.
