Widespread across Europe and Asia, Allium senescens (syn. A. lusitanicum) forms a dense clump of narrow, flat leaves that often twist like a corkscrew. In late summer, stems 20-60 cm tall carry a single globose umbel of 20 to 30 small pink to mauve flowers. Unlike most alliums, this summer-growing species lacks a true bulb. Hardy and undemanding, it thrives in well-drained soil in full sun and suits both borders and rock gardens.
