Alophia drummondii

Native to the southern United States and Mexico, with disjunct populations in Bolivia and Guyana, Alophia drummondii, or the propeller flower, is a herbaceous Iridaceae growing from a tunicated bulb. Reaching 30 to 60 cm tall, it has long, narrow, pleated basal leaves clasping the stem. The flowers, borne in a small terminal cluster, open one at a time over several days and each lasts only a single day: the three outer tepals are spreading, light to deep purple, while the smaller inner ones are crimped and spotted reddish-brown at the base. Flowering occurs from May to July, in well-drained soil and full sun.
