The genus Alstroemeria (Alstroemeriaceae), known as lily of the Incas, comprises around a hundred species of rhizomatous perennials native to South America, chiefly Chile, Brazil and Peru. Their resupinate leaves and umbels of flowers, often streaked or mottled with contrasting colours, bloom in summer.
