Albuca maxima (syn. Albuca altissima, Asparagaceae) is a tall bulb native to South Africa, growing in coastal sands and rocky soils from Namaqualand to Riversdale. Its flowering stem, up to 1 m tall, carries numerous nodding white bells with a green central stripe, from spring into early summer (September to November in South Africa). The broad, fleshy leaves wither as flowering begins. Grow in full sun in well-drained soil, and protect the bulb from frost.
