Amaryllis belladonna Bidwell hybrid
The short (40cm) flowering stem carries 8-10 small trumpet shaped flowers with pointed petals, finely striped with soft pink. It is likely to be one a descendant of Bidwell's multifloras: mr Bidwell did a lot of work on Amaryllis x Brunsvigia crosses in Australia in the 19th century. One of the last Amaryllis forms to flower. Leaves appear quite late in december.
The genus
The true amaryllis: dormant during the summer months; suddenly, towards the end of the summer, the tall flowering scapes appear which bears a bouquet of fragrant trumpets. To be used in background against shrubs or in larger dry rockeries. In colder regions chose a warm sheltered position and protect the bulbs by a mulch. During heavy frosts protect the leaves with horticultural fleece. Flowering improves as the plants are established. Very suitable for cutflowers.
