Amaryllis belladonna type

The orginal botanical form is the easiest to grow and has less problems with virus infections. Flowers earlier than the cultivars. Will naturalise in mild coastal areas. I find in my garden, So Calif, the belladonnas do better in full sun. They also do better if divided every 3 years, they multiply so much that they tend to push the older bulbs up out of the ground and only the newer ones, in the ground bloom. If you seperate the older ones or the ones out of the ground and replant they too will bloom, but the roots like to be at least touching the ground. Angelo Porcelli, Italy: my Amaryllis don't bloom anymore if the bulbs are pushed out of the soil from the new offsets. So I divide them every 3-4 years and I plant them rather deep 15cm (6") below soil level. Now all in full flowering ! The species is pale pink and flowers earlier than the cultivars. Easier to grow and has proven to be more resistant to virus infections. We continue to sell the bulbs afer flowering, until the leaves emerge.
