Ammocharis tinneata

Category photo (no photo of its own for this entry)
Widespread across much of sub-Saharan Africa (from Angola to Ethiopia and Zimbabwe), Ammocharis tinneana grows in savanna and sandy ground. Its large bulb, with a well-defined neck, can reach 12 cm across. The leaves, spread flat on the ground in two opposite fans 1 to 3 cm wide, appear before, during or after flowering. A short scape, 5 to 25 cm tall, bears a dense umbel of 10 to 30 strongly scented pink flowers fading to magenta, or white, with a tube 6 to 10 cm long and tepals spirally twisted at the tip. It differs from Ammocharis coranica in its slenderer petals and shorter scape.
