Androcymbium rechninger

Endemic to western Crete (Falassarna and surroundings, the islet of Imeri Gramvousa, and Elafonisos island), Androcymbium rechingeri grows in colonies on exposed coastal dunes and outcrops, in well-drained sandy soil. This low-growing Colchicaceae, 7-10 cm tall, produces leaves up to 15 cm long and white, pink-veined flowers, more than four per plant, 3-6 cm across. Winter flowering (December-February) precedes the tourist season that directly threatens the species, which is listed as Endangered due to degradation of its very restricted coastal habitat.
