Apodolirion buchananii, sometimes called the Natal crocus, is a small bulbous plant in the Amaryllis family, native to southern Africa (KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, Eastern Cape, Free State, Eswatini, Lesotho), where it grows in grassland subject to periodic fires. Essentially stemless, it produces fragrant, nectarless yellow flowers at ground level, often right after a fire and before the foliage has regrown. Remarkably, its ovary remains underground and the fruit takes about six months to mature below the soil surface. In cultivation, this species requires well-drained soil, a sunny position, and a marked summer dormancy.
