Colchicum bivonae 'Apollo' (Colchicaceae) is a cultivar derived from this species from southern Europe and Turkey, known for passing strong chequering to its hybrids. 'Apollo' produces, in autumn and without leaves, large, widely open, cup-shaped flowers with a white throat and petals strongly tessellated in raspberry-purple on a paler ground. Grow in full sun or part shade, in well-drained, humus-rich soil; hardy to around -15 °C.
