Dahlia arborea

Category photo (no photo of its own for this entry)
The name 'Dahlia arborea' is used in horticulture for the tree dahlia, Dahlia imperialis, on account of its woody, shrub-like habit reaching several metres tall. Native to the mountains from Mexico to Colombia, it develops hollow, bamboo-like stems and finely divided foliage, topped in late autumn by large, nodding pink-mauve flowers. Grow in a sheltered spot in rich, moist soil and full sun; top growth is killed by frost in winter, and the rootstock resprouts in spring if protected.
