The exact species of this Arisaema in the collection has not been identified; this entry therefore describes the general characters of the genus. Arisaema comprises about 190 species of tuberous perennials, native mainly to East Asia and the Himalayas, with a few species in North America. The tuber, disc- or cigar-shaped, produces compound foliage and, in spring or summer, the characteristic arum inflorescence: a spadix enclosed by a hooded spathe, often striped or mottled with green, white, or purple, followed by orange-red berries. Cultivation requires cool, humus-rich, well-drained soil in part shade, with the tuber planted in autumn.
