Arisaema triphylum

Native to moist woodlands, swamps and floodplains of eastern North America (from New Brunswick south to Florida and Texas), Arisaema triphyllum, or Jack-in-the-pulpit, is a tuberous perennial 30-60 cm tall. Its three-parted leaves rise above a distinctive inflorescence: a green or purple spathe, striped within, curls hood-like around an upright spadix bearing tiny flowers. Flowering occurs in spring, followed in summer by showy bright red berries relished by birds. It prefers light to part shade and a rich, cool, moisture-retentive soil.
