Arisarum vulgare (Araceae), the friar's cowl, is a rhizomatous perennial from the Mediterranean basin, from the Caucasus to the Iberian Peninsula. Its glossy, heart-shaped leaves accompany a curious tubular, brown-purple, white-striped inflorescence resembling a hooded monk, held just above the ground in winter. Growth begins in autumn, and the plant goes summer-dormant once the heat sets in. Grow in part shade, in cool, humus-rich soil, in woodland conditions; it naturalises readily in Mediterranean gardens.
