Aristea ecklonii (Iridaceae), known as blue stars, is an evergreen rhizomatous perennial native to southern and eastern Africa (Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, north to Tanzania). It forms a clump of narrow, sword-shaped leaves from which numerous small, star-shaped, vivid blue flowers rise from late spring to early summer, each lasting a single day but continuously renewed. It attracts butterflies. Grow in full sun or part shade, in well-drained soil, with moderate watering; hardy to light frost.
