Freesia armstrongi

Freesia armstrongii (Iridaceae) is no longer an accepted name: it now denotes the bright pink forms of Freesia corymbosa, a cormous geophyte from the Eastern Cape of South Africa. Introduced in 1898, the plant grows 15–40 cm tall, with a fan of plane leaves and a basally bent spike of zygomorphic, long-tubed rose-pink flowers. Crossed at Haarlem with white freesias, it gave modern garden freesias their pink, red and orange colours. Flowering late winter into spring; grow in full sun, well-drained soil, dry in summer.
