The exact species could not be confirmed, so this entry describes the genus Arum generally. This Araceae genus comprises about thirty species of tuberous perennials native to Europe, the Mediterranean basin and western Asia. The leaves, often arrow-shaped, glossy and sometimes marbled, emerge in autumn or spring depending on the species. Spring flowering is marked by a funnel-shaped spathe, white, green, purple or brown, surrounding an upright spadix bearing tiny unisexual flowers at its base; some species emit a strong odour to attract pollinating insects. Toxic and rich in calcium oxalate, they prefer cool soil and partial shade.
